As discussed in this article, we do not automatically push theme updates to your store. Whatever version of the Convertify theme you installed and configured will remain your live theme (exactly as-is) until you update to the newest version of Convertify.
This tutorial walks you step by step through the process of updating to the newest version of Convertify. Before we do that, though, there are a few things worth noting:
- You will not be overwriting your current version of the Convertify theme. Rather, you will be downloading a new instance (i.e. a new copy) of Convertify. Your current version of Convertify will remain intact (exactly as-is) in your theme library, so you can always revert back to it if you want to.
- Power-Up settings (which are configured in the Convertify app) are separate from the theme files and are not affected when you update to the newest version of the Convertify theme. Updating to a new version of Convertify will not impact your Power-Up settings in any way.
Without further ado, here are the steps you'll need to follow to update to the newest version of Convertify:
- Download a new copy of the Convertify theme
- Preview the new Convertify theme to ensure it looks & functions perfectly
- Publish the new Convertify theme
- Do additional front-end testing
Let's now dive into the details for each of these 3 steps.
Step 1: Download a New Copy of the Convertify Theme
As mentioned above, you will not be overwriting (replacing) your current version of Convertify. Rather, you will be downloading a new copy of the theme (but your current copy of the theme will remain in your Convertify Theme Library in case you want to revert back to it).
To download the latest and greatest version of Convertify, navigate to the Convertify Theme Library page in the Convertify app and click the 'Download New Copy' button.
In the modal window that appears, you'll see two 'Download Type' options:
Option 1. Blank/empty theme with default settings & content, OR
Option 2. Copy theme settings and sections/content from one of your existing copies of the Convertify theme.
You'll want to select the 2nd option (i.e. Copy theme settings...).
When you click the 2nd radio button, a new field titled 'Select your current theme' will appear. Use the drop-down menu to select your current (active) theme. This is the theme that your theme settings and content (i.e. sections) will be copied from.
In the last field, enter a unique name/title for this new copy of the theme. Then click the 'Download New Copy' button at the bottom of the modal window.
It will take 1-2 minutes for the new copy of Convertify to be downloaded and for the theme settings and content to be copied over from your current Convertify theme. Once the download is completed, the modal window will disappear and the Convertify Theme Library page will refresh automatically. In the table, you will now see both your current version of the Convertify theme (which is still active/published) and the newly downloaded version of the Convertify theme with the name you chose for it (which is unpublished). The new version of Convertify won't become "live" on your site until you publish it (which is step 3 below).
Step 2: Preview the New Convertify Theme to Ensure It Looks & Functions Perfectly
Before publishing the new theme, you'll want to take several minutes to preview it and make sure everything looks good and functions well. To do this, simply click the 'Customize' button for the newly downloaded copy of the theme.
This will open the Shopify Theme Editor, which shows a preview of your site. By default, you'll be looking at your site's home page, but you can click any of the links/buttons in your site's header, body or footer to navigate to other pages on your site. Take several minutes to carefully review all of the different types of pages on your site (home page, collection pages, product pages, cart/checkout pages, blog pages, policy pages, other pages, etc.).
If certain content or settings didn't transfer over correctly, you'll need to use the Theme Editor to edit that content or change the theme settings. (Also please note that the new version of the Convertify theme may have sections/content/features that didn't exist in older versions of Convertify. In these cases, our default settings will be used, which you may want to change.) If there are major problems or issues with the new version of the theme, please contact us or submit a help ticket so we can look into it for you.
Please take the necessary time to carefully review the new version of the Convertify theme before continuing on to step 3 and publishing it. Once you're satisfied, proceed to step 3.
Step 3: Publish the New Convertify Theme
To publish the new version of the Convertify theme, go back to the Convertify Theme Library page in the Convertify app and click the vertical ... menu button (to the right of the 'Customize' button) and select the 'Publish Theme' option. Then click 'Yes' to confirm.
The new Convertify theme is now live on your website. (Note: You may need to hard-refresh a few times -- and possibly even clear your browser cache and cookies -- in order to see the changes on your live website.)
Step 4: Do Additional Front-End Testing
The preview in Shopify's Theme Editor is pretty good at showing an accurate preview of what the live site will look like, but it's not perfect. Now that the new Convertify theme is live on your site, you should again take several minutes to check out the live site and complete a test checkout or two or three. Ideally, you should do this using all major web browsers to ensure your site looks and functions perfectly for all of them. We cannot be held responsible for lost sales or other adverse consequences arising from problems or issues with your theme.
